Turbo Intake Comparison
This time, we decided to test turbo intakes!
(With upto a 37.3rwkw difference its definitely worth a read!)
Note : We pre-installed rivnuts and the power cable for a battery side intake kit to our R&D FGX, just so we didn't have to remove it from the dyno and to make sure we get true figures.
Our R&D FGX G6E-T is already fitted with a process west stage 2 intercooler, XR6TD intercooler pipes, 1000cc Injectors, Walbro460 Intank Fuel Pump, XFORCE 4" Exhaust, GT3585 Turbo with a flapper mod & actuator & is tuned by us on 98 fuel.
What we tested:
- Stock airbox and genuine Ford filter
- Stock airbox and K&N filter
- Modded airbox with K&N filter
- Modded airbox with filter and muffler delete
- 3" batteryside intake from XR6TD
- 4" batteryside intake from XR6TD
Test Parameters:
- Car strapped on the dyno and not touched once test commenced
- New air filters
- Car idles for 5 minutes before each test
- No tune changes
Results
- Stock airbox and filter - 350.1RWKW
- Stock airbox and K&N - 356.3 RWKW
- Modded box and K&N filter - 369.0RWKW
- Modded box, with Muffler delete - 371.4RWKW
- XR6TD 3" battery side intake - 378.6 RWKW
- XR6TD 4" battery side intake - 387.4RWKW
We found our FGX started to get valve float with the higher boost levels (still has the stock springs!)
We DEFINITELY recommend re-tuning a car once you do an intake modification, especially if the car has been tuned before, as mid to top end boost gains can climb depending how the car was tuned.
